Saturday Storm: In Loving Memory

Our writing often strikes personal chords in our lives.   It can provide a therapeutic outlet as we go through painful experiences.  It can also help others cope with similar struggles or bring a living legacy to someone we love.   Whether you are journaling this week or writing with a goal to share with others, may you find healing in your writing.

People experience loss through death, divorce, illness, defects, abuse, or jobs…just to name a few.   Write about an experience that you have had with loss. -Or- Write a prayer, poem, or dedication to someone who is currently experiencing loss in your life.

Saturday Storm

The Saturday Storm is moving in!  Your method of defense:  A pencil and paper!  To calm the storm, you must write!  That’s right- let the rain pour down from your mind!  You can use my prompt or something you are already working on.

In honor of our first Saturday Storm, and one of my own favorite manuscripts, our prompt today is:  STORMS!

Task #1- Write about an experience you’ve had with a storm or rain.  It might be a frightening, stressful, fun, embarrassing, or surprising experience.   Complete this task before moving to Task #2.

Task #2- (Fiction Writers)  How can you make your experience into a fictional story?  The Saturday Storm is kicking up a tornado to mix it all up!  What interesting characters or elements can you mix into your experience?  What zany, wacky, unexpected-kick can you add?

Task #2- (Non-Fiction/Faction Writers)  With so many storms that have rocked our world, surely there are unique elements that can be retold.  Survivors of storms have stories to tell.  Good luck being a storm story chaser!

Tornadoes are unpredictable…the direction of your story has endless possibilities.  I know you’ll come out with a winner. Let’s take this prompt by storm!

Thank you for visiting my blog!  People need each other, and I am honored that you are allowing me to be your literary friend.  When we take time to share our reading and writing with others, it becomes more meaningful, comfortable, and passionate.  Let's carry on together!

I am pleased to welcome my very own children as our first guests!  Since they wanted to interview me, I will let them take the reigns from here:

Kids:  We are so excited to do a super short interview of our mom, today!  Are you ready, Mom?

Carrie:  You betcha!

Kids:  Did that count as the first question?

Carrie:  Um, no.  Start now.

Kids:  Okay, fine.

Little C:  What is your favorite picture book?

Carrie:  Well, it certainly is hard to choose just one, but a few of my favorites are Chloe and the Lion by Mac Barnett, Boy + Bot by Ame Dyckman, and Being Frank by Donna W. Earnhardt.  I love books that are funny, have unexpected twists, and capture the wonder of being a child.

E-Rock:  What is your favorite gum flavor?

Carrie:  I can still smell and taste the tangy super-powered grape bursts of flavor that I enjoyed as a child!  It made really huge bubbles, too!

Big C:  What is your main goal as a writer?

Carrie:  Impacting children in a positive way through literary experiences has always been my goal as a teacher, writer, and mom.  My hope is to inspire children so much that they will ooze excitement, and then go out and affect others in the same way, too.

Kids:  Since we each asked a question now, can we go play?

Carrie:  Didn't you want to tell our loyal readers about the Carrie On...Book Clubs, that you will be hosting?

Kids:  Oh, yeah!  Be sure to subscribe so you won't miss the chance to be part of our book clubs.  They start on June 1st!  We want you to read with us, and share your comments.  Can't wait to read together!

As a children’s writer, and a teacher, my goal is to help you carry on.  Sometimes learning is challenging, so why go it alone?  Your journey will be more meaningful and comfortable with friends to share it with. Together, we'll get up close and personal with authors, illustrators, and the best of picture books.  If we work together, great things will follow!
