Eensie Weensie Halloween Fun (Contest Alert!)

10/27/2014

Oh, you guys!  I am so excited to finally have time to participate in Susanna Leonard Hill's Halloweensie Contest.  Why am I doing it?  It's fun!  You can do it, too.  It will raise your writing spirits.
  • Underlying Topic: Halloween
  • Words you must use in your entry: Creak, Broomstick, Pumpkin (any form of these words- Example: Creak, creaked, creaks, etc.)
  • Word Limit: 100 words!  That's why it's called HalloWEENSIE!
Official Rules and Prizes are listed HERE. Susanna's the boss on this one, so it's her way or the highway.  Ha, ha!  Susanna's amazing, folks.  You'll need to check out her official rules so you know exactly what to do.  And you'll want to see the awesome prizes!

Here's my entry!  See you over at Susanna's!

Prankenstein (94 words)

Creeeeeak! Hello?  Is someone there?
Why’d I take my brother’s dare?
Wandering out into the night,
Dark and freezing, filled with fright.
I walk further.  Not sure why.
Broomsticks swish!  I start to cry.
Lights go on.  It’s just my mom…
Cleaning up the pumpkin bomb.
What a nasty prank to play!
It’s my brother’s turn to pay.

Now’s my chance. I get in place.
Hidden in the empty space.

Shh! It’s him! He shuffles near.
Just about. He’s almost here!
“BLAH!” I shout, and watch him jump.
“Look who’s laughing now, ya chump!”

Thank, Cheryl! Sometimes I'm so tightly wound that the fun oozes out of my fingertips and into my keyboard. This being no exception. :)

Thanks Heather! I'm always rooting for the younger sibling to get the older one back! :) Sometimes they think they are so funny, go too far, and need a taste of their own medicine. :)

Sibling rivalry story of my household now that they are older: Pranks and "getting him back." Lovely. Although, I know my first graders thought it was funny to play pranks, too. :)

Ha! Have you SEEN one, though, Susan? Or been part of the clan that took one and smashed it? :) I was never a pumpkin smasher, myself, but always felt sorry for the poor little smashed pumpkins and families who lost their "loved ones." Hmmm...story idea just struck!

And sometimes it's fun to scare my kids, too... but only when they are able to laugh about it! One time I thought I was playing a funny joke and ended up scaring my oldest son to tears. Such a mean mommy! Maybe he'll think twice about scaring his little brother, though?

Thanks, Catherine! Sibling rivalry has always been one of those things that drives me the craziest as a parent. It's funny the stages it goes through as they get older. My kids started pranking and scaring each other and about a year ago. Of course, the sibling rivalry was HUGE when my brother and I were growing up, too, so it ends up being in a lot of my stories.

Thanks so much, Jilanne! Being the older sibling, I'm sure my little brother would have pleasure saying the same. However, since he got me in trouble so much, even when I was NOT victimizing him, I think he got his revenge early. :) After watching my own kids go through this, I do root for the younger one here, too. :)
