Saturday Storm- Childhood Wishes

Wishes run deep and wide for kids.  Author Debbie Dadey wished she could have a horse when she was little.  Although that wish never came true for her, she was able to turn it into a new kind of wish...for her main character, Echo.   On September 17, she celebrated the release of The Mermaid Tales, Book 6: The Secret Sea Horse.  Echo, the mermaid, has the same childhood wish that Debbie had when she was little!   But, for Echo it's a sea horse!  Just look at the plot Debbie was able to turn out from this childhood wish:  Things get complicated when Echo's sister says a sea horse should be free and not held in captive.  A great debate arises between the students of Trident Academy.  Should creatures be kept as pets?   If that wasn't enough trouble for Echo, she is not a very good speller.  With spelling tests and a secret sea horse problem, will Echo survive third grade?

So...what about you?  Did you have a special wish during childhood?  Did it come true or not?  Let's take some time today to brainstorm how our childhood wishes, (or even those of our kids), can become the topic for a story.  As a reward for your hard work, Debbie wanted to reward a copy of her newest book to one lucky winner!   Just leave a comment about your childhood wish by October 4 at 7pm, and you will be entered to win!  The winner will be announced next Saturday, October 5.

I always wished for a horse also! I used do draw them and write stories about them. I have a couple of "novels" about horses that I wrote in 3rd and fourth grade:)

As a children’s writer, and a teacher, my goal is to help you carry on.  Sometimes learning is challenging, so why go it alone?  Your journey will be more meaningful and comfortable with friends to share it with. Together, we'll get up close and personal with authors, illustrators, and the best of picture books.  If we work together, great things will follow!
