Saturday Storm: Delve into Dialogue

I have two awesome reasons for posting a little late today.

1.  I am sick.  Now, I know that may not be a "great" thing to be, but you truly would not have benefitted from the post I would have made while hacking, blowing my nose, and suppressing dizziness!

2. I attended the North Texas SCBWI Writing Conference today!  So, that means I've got a goody for your Saturday Storm today!  I was so inspired by Lin Oliver!  Not only is she the co-founder of SCBWI, she is also an amazing children's author and writer-producer of many family films and television shows/series.  She even runs her own production company: Lin Oliver Productions.  Her involvement with film and movies has allowed her to have a special insight into dialogue.

Lin had us doing some awesome writing exercises today.  Why not exercise our minds together?  It will really liven up your dialogue.  Here is your challenge, courtesy of Lin:

Your task is to offer us a greeting.  But, you must say it like a sweaty cowboy!  You can use mine as an example:  "Howdy!  It shore is a brow wipin' day!"  You get the idea... try it in lots of different character's voices.  Make it authentic.

Now, take a look back at your work in progress.  Does your dialogue need a makeover?  Or is it forced and unnatural?

A special thanks to Lin Oliver for the awesome writing warm-ups!

As a children’s writer, and a teacher, my goal is to help you carry on.  Sometimes learning is challenging, so why go it alone?  Your journey will be more meaningful and comfortable with friends to share it with. Together, we'll get up close and personal with authors, illustrators, and the best of picture books.  If we work together, great things will follow!
