Just the mention of back to school seems to send everyone into a blizzard of "gotta finish this, gotta do that"  before school starts again.  If you didn't get a chance to check out our August Book Club and still need great recommendations for your reading log, check out the club here.

For the children who actively read books all summer long, I applaud you!  Standing ovation!  Our book authority, Erik Weibel, of This Kid Reviews Books, had this to say about his August Book Club recommendations:

Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods

This book is hilarious! Percy Jackson’s point of view on common Greek myths is one of a kind, and full of wit. I find it completely funny that Percy explains all the myths in the modern language of a teenager. And that he also wise-cracks at the gods’ antics.  I was laughing out loud at this multiple times! I think that Mr. Riordan has written a fun story that will get kids interested in the Greek gods and their myths. I was a bit surprised at the size of the book (meaning the physical size of it - it's BIG) , but I soon got used to it, and enjoyed its feel. I totally recommend this book to anyone interested in mythology, Percy Jackson or just good books! – You’ll love it!

Emperor Pickletine Rides the Bus

This was a great final installment in the Origami Yoda series, even if it made me sad to see it end. Mr. Angleberger has written a wonderful, funny, and altogether memorable series about a bunch of kids and their origami Star Wars guys and all the wisdom their origami creations give them. I like how the kids in this book go to Washington DC, and also how they creatively break the NO ORIGAMI! rule, while not breaking it. For a Star Wars geek who does origami in his spare time, this series is the jackpot for me! Tommy is a great main character. I love how he handles situations. All the kids in the book seem very realistic to me. This was a great ending to an AWESOME series!

To thee, I give a 21-fold salute!

Bear is quite sure he does not want any visitors. But, will he change his mind when an unexpected hopeful steps in? (Side note: When we read this one, an English accent just seems to pop out of our little visitor! Be sure to read with plenty of expression!)

There are so many emotions and experiences that shape our personalities and relationships as children. Let Annie remind you of the wonder of childhood and just how fragile kids can be. Don't let the picture fool you...this is not just for girls! My entire third grade class loved this book! After all, it made the Texas Bluebonnet Master List in 2010-2011.

We treasure this as our top fantasy pick featuring magic, muggles, wizards and witches of good and evil, friendships...truly a world like no other. J.K. Rowling is the detail queen! We have not experienced a comparable author who is able to make a more vivid movie in your head without actually seeing a movie!

Two unlikely friends find each other in my favorite mirror story. Will they understand what makes one another tick? Kids will adore the silliness surrounding the mishaps in this story!

Not your typical dragon story...for sure! Even better! Little C and I had so much fun guessing what the dragon would breathe through each crisis in the story!

Will Amy find her puppy? Little C says this one is easy to read and a great mystery for young kids!

Action and adventure abound in this tale of mythological monsters and demigod friends! It is still Collin's #1 fav, even though he first read it 4 years ago! E-Rock is now reading it, too.
