PreReFoReMo Day 3: Emily Arrow Supports through Song

As our research boats drift out to sea, let's carry Emily Arrow's words and song with us as motivation.

Carrie:
What inspired you to start writing songs to accompany picture books?

Emily:
To me, picture books have an inherent tune, tone, and rhythm. During my time as an elementary music teacher, I used books in my classroom often. Each one invoked such a musical response in me that I began writing songs about my favorite stories. I love weaving each book's narrative into a rhymed, interactive song and I use the illustrations as inspiration for the chords and sound palette.

Wow. Keep that in mind as you write and illustrate! Are your stories in perfect harmony?

Your literary lives will be enriched by following Emily! Every time I watch one of her literary tributes, an overwhelming amount of joy and love fill me up.  I encourage you to subscribe to her You Tube channel, where you can find so many more songs that celebrate this amazing form we call picture books. Like the authors and illustrators featured above, we are thrilled to have her gift of song to support our efforts. Thank you, Emily!

It hasn't been mentioned yet, although I'm sure a lot of people already know this, but Emily is doing a wonderful job engaging at least two more of the seven multiple intelligences. (As a former music teacher, I'm sure she is well aware of this.) Picture books inherently reach the visual/spatial and verbal/linguistic learners. By adding music and movement to the stories, Emily is also reaching the musical and bodily/kinesthetic learners. Way to go, Emily!

Love that you are combining books and music! I totally agree with Juliana Lee that by using music you are reaching more of the multiple intelligences. Today there are nine multiple intelligences, with Naturalist intelligence and Existential intelligence being added to the original seven. We know that the vast majority of children are learning through verbal-linguistic and visual/spatial intelligences and by adding the music component to learning you are also reaching the bodily/kinesthetic learners. (Howard Gardener, Multiple Intelligences: New Horizons in Theory and Practice)

I will definitely be going meep, meep, meep ... oog, oog, oog all day long

i love the songs and the actions. i was a teacher and used education through music in calss. I believe music adds a wonderful dimensions to life and also to learning. I have written simple tunes into the back on 2books for children to enjoy with parents. One is a song about a local fair and the other is my setting of a Christmas carol. it was fun to do as music is often in my head. I compliment you for the joyful tunes and your delight in doing avideo with your children! Super idea. Thanks

Songs seem like poetry to me, and picture books often seem like poems as well--in how lyrical they can be, and the importance of every single word. It seems like a natural progression, then, to turn picture books into music and how beautifully Emily Arrow does this! Excited to meet her and new books through ReFoReMo :-).

Finally watched Emily's videos and now 30 minutes later I've downloaded the album and watched almost all her videos on YouTube. So inspired! Curious where in Ohio Emily is from...

Love this concept! I often try to make a song out of a concept my daughter needs to learn for school. Children love music so much!

Thanks for creating songs and music for children's literature and for children. I taught creative movement to young children and had so much fun incorporating literature, music and song! It was wonderful to watch those children who struggled in the world of sitting still and listening to words, become successful and joyful with music, rhythm and movement.
