ReFoReMo Day 31:  ReFoReMo Family Cheers for New Mentor Text Habits

4/1/2015

by Carrie Charley Brown

Welcome to our celebration, ReFoReMo Family!  I hear our theme song playing loud and clear!  A family that reads together, stays together.  From the lyrics, you will see it's clear that we need to keep our goals in sight and persevere.  (My only alteration is to add "brothers" to the sisters in the lyrics.)

Whether you read one book or five each day, you are a winner!  If you increased your reading research habits in any way, you are a winner!  Even if one mentor text helped you revise a manuscript, you are a winner!  I am proud of each and every one of you! Please leave me a comment below to share your achievements.  Then, please post your ReFoReMo Winner Badge on your blog or website, and link it back to this address:  http://www.carriecharleybrown.com/what-is-reforemo.html

Thanks, again, to Lori Nawyn for the beautiful artwork!

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, our time together is not yet over.  There’s a lot more in store for you!  You are part of the ReFoReMo family now and I'm so proud to be your ReFoReMo Mama!   (Bring it in for a hug!)

This challenge would not have been possible without lots of support.  Please give a standing ovation to the 2015 ReFoReMo Admin team: Kirsti Call, Suzy Leopold, and Tracey M. Cox.  They assisted with the Facebook group, shared guest-educator posts in the big wide world of social media, and spread good discussion vibes!  They offered mighty fine guest-educator posts of their own, too, wouldn’t you agree?  BIG HUGS to these gals!
Picture
Stay on your feet for our guest-educators!  They offered valuable, varied resourceful posts and recommendations. Thank you, thank you, thank you!  There is a bookmark in the ReFoReMo sidebar for each of their posts, and I encourage you to revisit them and keep a watch on their achievements.  Hugs and high fives are on the house for all 32 guest-educators!

Okay, okay…Enough of the mushy stuff.  It’s time for Rafflecopter directions:

If you consistently read picture books every day between March 8-28, commented on each prize post (including this one), and you are properly registered (following #1 and #2 from the registration post), then you are eligible to enter the Rafflecopter drawing one time.  This will place you in the drawing for all of the prizes.  You may view the prizes by scrolling through the Rafflecopter (see dots under the first listed prize.)  If you enter more than once, you will be disqualified.  Registrations and comments will be verified before announcing prize winners.  But, as far as your reading goes, we are on the honor system.  The Rafflecopter is only open from 12am CST March 31 to 12am CST April 1.  One day.  That’s it.  Make sure you take advantage of your entry while you can.

a Rafflecopter giveaway
Thank you for dedicating yourself to the picture book craft.  You left a trail of sweat that leads right to the library... and your house… and the bookstore.  I can’t wait to see your name in lights!

A huge thanks to you, Carrie for bringing this wonderful challenge to me and to Kirsty, Suzy and Tracey. Loved every day of it and I think that the main thing I have absorbed is the top quality that successful books need and how much they have to offer. Also recognizing elements in books is more obvious to me. And yes, there were books I didn't like last year that having read again with the challenge, I liked a lot more.

I have learned so much consciously but I know even more unconsciously. I even took books to my writing group so we could discuss. I will never look at picture books the same. What I liked most of all was the way author - educators used the mentor texts to increase the joy of PB. Sometimes when you study something you lose the joy for it but not in ReFoReMo. The joy just increased every day. Carrie thank you so much for all your hard work. This has been a busy month but also I got up every day excited about the lesson for the day.

I really enjoyed this challenge because this is one of the ways I have always learned best. I've learned more than I ever wanted to know about picture book writing by studying mentor texts. It took years, but with this challenge, it made other things pop out to me that had not before. The support was fabulous. I revised several PB's and even wrote new ones based on what I learned from the books I studied. Thanks everyone who contributed to this challenge. It's been grand and I'm glad to continue it on.

Thank you, Carrie, for all the hard work and great ideas you brought our way this month. One surprising thing for me was in going through a number of the recommended books, there were quite a few that didn't wow me. Looking closely at them was a good opportunity to see why they wowed an editor. And of course, I have some new favorites to study, too!

You are right, Sandy. Wow for one is not always wow for all. There are some PBs I read and think, "How did this get published? What did the editor see in this?" The only answer is that this business is so subjective. :) We must keep pressing through it all and be true to ourselves, as well as the new knowledge we acquire. Great job recognizing the take away in those less than stellar to you examples. I'm sure it showed you a lot about what you believe in, as well.

There were several books recommended in the posts again and again, but with a different element to study so I found that I needed to go back and reread a book to learn that different element. By rereading a book multiple times it helped me really understand the quality of that book which in turn will help me become a better picture book writer. Many thanks and bear hugs go out to you, and all the wonderful people that helped you make ReFoReMo a delightful, educating, dynamite experience.

A wonderful experience. So many books! Although I used mentor texts before doing ReFoReMo, I wasn't very focused. I feel like I will be much more efficient at it now. I developed a template to fill out for each book (first & last lines, likes & dislikes, what it means for my own writing, endings & themes) with the plot connector on the flip side. Did that for about 75 books until I was overwhelmed with information. Then I just read another 20 or so. Saving all the nonfiction titles for another month when I can really study them. Great resources from your guest posts. Thanks so much!

The mentor text and the posts worked well together. I have always been a big reader so the reading part was very enjoyable to me. The posts brought out what to look for in the mentor text. Researching more than one book makes it clear. I am sure I will reference my notes often and now will have a new habit in the writing process. The best accomplishment for me after doing the research I feel a little more comfortable writing in areas that prior to this I thought were out of my comfort zone. Reading so many is such a concentrated time really helped me refine what I like (humor and surprise) and what I usually don't (anything too mushy). I discovered a new appreciation for non-fiction picture books, and I have begun to develop some ideas of my own. Thanks again for all your support and organizational wizardry. Thanks so much again for this great challenge and to all who helped to make it such a success. As of last night, I have read 152 books--many of which I have shared with my daughter. I still have holds coming in, too--so the fun will continue. I have read some books that I never would have chosen on my own, have discovered some great new titles and authors, and have learned a lot about current PBs (their flow, conventions, etc.). I did not take notes on all of the books I read, just those that were relevant to me and to my writing. I know my writing has already improved and will continue to do so, as I continue to study mentor texts. I have a new understanding of and attention to my opening/closing lines. I love the plot connector tool and plan to use it in my writing (and in future PB analysis). I have gained so much from this challenge and am excited that the posts, education, and encouragement will continue in this group. Many thanks :)
