Meet Carrie Charley Brown

Everything starts with a story, and Carrie's began with an extreme passion for storytelling, dramatics, and literary presentations as a child and teen. In 1989, she packed her storytelling bag, and headed to The University of Iowa, in pursuit of a teaching career. She wrote and illustrated her first picture book manuscript as an assignment for a children’s literature class, making it a goal to publish one day. But first, she sang and story-told her way into the hearts of kindergartners, a husband, three children, and finally, third graders. Never forgetting her dream to write and publish children’s books, she opened a new chapter in her life, as a full-time picture book writer in 2012. Since then, she has immersed herself in the industry, soaking up every possible experience to better her writing.
She is the founder and co-coordinator of ReFoReMo, the Reading for Research Month blog & challenge, which continues on it's new site at www.reforemo.com. She eats, sleeps, and breathes picture books as a writer, professional critique mentor, and contributor on various blogs such as Writer's Rumpus. Carrie contributed as a 2014/2015 CYBILS fiction picture book panelist and the Regional Advisor for SCBWI North Texas. She has produced kidlit videos and marketing services for authors and kidlit organizations. Her advice for writers of all ages: Surround yourself with other positive writers who have the same level of commitment as yourself. Then, always remember that little steps, over time, add up in a big way.
After a move across the country in 2016, Carrie lives in Louisville, Kentucky with her husband Richard, and three children. She most recently obtained a Master of Education in School Library Media and Literacy and is currently surrounded by books as a Library Media Specialist. She continues to mentor picture book writers as a 12 x 12 Critique Ninja and on her own time as a picture book mentor. You can follow her writing journey right here on this site.
