The ReFoReMo Challenge is Coming Soon!

1/4/2015

Are you a picture book writer?  This challenge is for you!  The ReFoReMo Challenge, or Reading for Research Month Challenge, was developed to help you reform your writing by reading and researching mentor texts.  The challenge will be based around a wide variety of picture books to include both fiction and nonfiction.

As picture book writers, it is necessary to read heaps and gobs of picture books to truly understand the form, the market, and the craft of writing them.  This challenge will be a place to build your reading background with current widely recommended picture books, research, learn how to use mentor texts, and share GREAT picture book models.  Each day of the first week will feature longer guest posts from established author-educators.  Guests will share ten model picture book titles and tips on how to use the texts to grow as a writer. During this first week, you will begin checking out titles from the library.

The following three weeks will be reading weeks, with super short guest author posts of 5 additional picture book recommendations per day. Our big goal will be to read five picture books per day, enabling us to read 105 titles during this time frame. Of course, emphasis will be on quality rather than quantity.  It is true that the more you read, the better you will learn the market.  However, some of us will want to spend more time with certain books than others while we research. You will find overlap in the recommendations.  This is a very good thing!  I've learned to follow the recommendations that I see multiple times, and it has led me to research gold!

The last week of ReFoReMo will be focused on finishing, sharing, and celebration. The biggest reward will be the research and knowledge you gain for your writing.  But, there will also be prize drawings, as well.  In addition, there will be a private Facebook Group for sharing research revelations, progress, and start discussions about books.

I am very excited to share this time with you and I encourage you to subscribe in the sidebar for additional updates. Registration opens February 15. You can find the author-educators and enter the sharing contest giveaway here.  If you have a question, feel free to leave me a comment here.  See you soon!

March is shaping up to be a terrific month. Since I am doing my second year of 12 x 12 and usually participate in ChaBooCha in March this will add depth and information for the non fic I am hoping to pursue this year. Thanks Carrie. I am always amazed and pleased at the energy and generosity of people who run these challenges for me to learn from.

Is there a reading list?

Reply
Carrie Charley Brown
1/20/2015 05:30:37 am

The reading list will be revealed in pieces as our guests make recommendations each day, Stacy. There will be ten titles each day for the first week, and five titles for each of the days the three weeks after. I will have a cumulative list under the "Tools" tab of the menu as it builds. There will naturally be some overlap in recs, and this is a great thing. I'll be posting more about the value in repeated recs after registration, but for now you can find a little about this in my guest post on Marcie Atkins blog: http://www.marcieatkins.com/2015/01/20/mentor-texts-for-writers-carrie-charley-brown-breaks-the-4th-wall/ See you soon!

None of the challenge will take place on Twitter, Kristen. There will be an optional Facebook group that will be a great place to share revelations with other participants. But, all of the guest posts will be public here on the blog. If you register, you may be eligible to win prizes at the end if you read consistently and comment on the daily posts. Be sure to sign up for updates. :)
